When rapper AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, gave his social media followers a glimpse of his love life with his fiancée, Anele Nelli Tembe, little did they know those would be her last hours alive.
Tembe allegedly jumped to her death at an upmarket hotel in Cape Town yesterday. She was confirmed dead by paramedics who attempted to resuscitate her after she injured herself from the plunge.
The couple had been engaged for two weeks when tragedy struck yesterday.
Forbes had been in Cape Town to celebrate a friend’s birthday while also performing at two night clubs on Saturday.
In a series of videos and pictures uploaded on his Instagram account, the couple seemed to be happy and buoyant as they went on about their day in the Mother City. In the first video, the couple appeared to be at a photo shoot, where they wore matching blue tops as cameras kept flashing. In the second video, which was recorded by Forbes, he is seen entering a MaXhosa Africa shop in Cape Town where he asks Tembe what she is doing. The 22-year-old responds by saying she’s shopping, before giggling. In another video, Forbes, Tembe, and two other males are seen enjoying lunch at a restaurant with a view of Table Mountain.
In a subsequent video, Forbes is heard saying: “We’re offering Forbes tours, ain’t we, baby?” to which a happy-sounding Tembe responds: “Of course.”
The uploaded content gave fans a glimpse of the couple’s life, taking them through a day that would be Tembe’s last hours alive.
The last video that Forbes uploaded was a close-up of Tembe having a good time at an event Forbes performed at while the last update was a picture of the 22-year-old in a white tank top and black shorts.
The couple’s families expressed shock and said they were still coming to terms with Tembe’s death.
Through a joint statement released yesterday, the families said: “She was an exceptional and gifted young woman, with so much life ahead of her. She had a sweet nature about her and was always nurturing to those around her. Her fiancé is currently inconsolable and is surrounded by family and close friends.”
Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said paramedics on the scene said a female had allegedly jumped from the 10th floor of the hotel.
“When paramedics arrived on scene, she had sustained polytraumatic injuries. She was in a critical condition and they started a full life-support resuscitation. Unfortunately her injuries were too severe and she was declared deceased,” said Herbst.
Western Cape Police media liaison Captain FC van Wyk said police were investigating an inquest case.
