Dlamini’s birthday party comes a few months after she asked the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court to be easy on her because she was a single mother who only made R110,000 a month, according to her lawyers. She lied under oath while she was minister of social development.

In April she was found guilty of perjury and given a four-year prison sentence, with half of it suspended. She could also pay an R200,000 fine instead. The court heard that she lived off of her R40,000 pension from parliament as a former MP and the R70,000 she gets every month from the ANC Women’s League. The court was also told that Dlamini used the more than R100,000 she gets to take care of herself and her family.

“She needs to take care of herself and her family with this money, since she is a single parent. She is now paying for her two daughters’ college educations. The oldest is 26, and the youngest is only 19.” She also helps pay for her niece’s college tuition, and like many Africans, she helps out her whole family when times are hard. Both of her parents are still alive, and she is also in charge of them. Many people on social media wondered how Dlamini could have had such an expensive birthday when she was having money problems.
