October 2020 is the day that South Africans will remember as the day that Durban Gen first aired it’s very first episode, the viewership from when the hospital soapie first aired was so high that so much was expected of the soapie.

And now after less than 2 years and 2 season’s the show has allegedly been axed, according to entertainment reporter Phil Mphela the once popular soapie will not be renewed for another season and it will officially come to an end in January 2023. After so much promise from it’s first episodes, the soapie which is produced by Stained Glass, the same company that produces the popular SABC 1 soapie Uzalo. This is not what the creator’s of the soapie expected.

When it first came soapie lover’s had compared it to America’s very own “The Good Doctor” and “Grey Anatomy” but just after 3 months of it’s debut the numbers had started falling and by the beginning of 2021 around 300 000 viewers were lost. This was then followed by a number of it’s main actor’s leaving the show. This was just the beginning and the viewership continued to decline.

The storylines in the soapie continued to be over the place, even when they introduced well known celebrities such as Lasizwe, it didn’t bring any change and it is always the case, once a soapies numbers drop it is always expected that they could be consequences and Durban Gen certainly suffered the same fate.

 

 

 

 

Credit though, should be given to Durban Gen for giving a lot of unknown actors and actresses the opportunity to be on screen, the likes of Dr Bhengu, Dr Jack, Dr Zondo and Nurses Calvin and Phumeza were unearthed and we got to see new faces on ours screens. After the news broke this past week, South African’s reacted with different opinions with others welcoming the move, other’s said they will miss the soapie as they had become addicted to it, below is how people reacted to the news.

When Makhumalo initially appeared on The Real Housewives of Durban, he and Laconco were already feuding. After a long period of time apart, the two will finally encounter each other face-to-face at their high school reunion. MaKhumalo trashed Laconco with such respect and dignity that it can never be undone. Although Ms Petal, who is convinced that everyone is terrified of her, tried to frighten LaC, she was unfazed. Makhumalo isn’t here to fix things or make people feel better about themselves. She lets Laconco create an opinion about her before striking back when she thinks she’s a pushover, which is exactly what she does. In the end, she is the one who wins because she doesn’t start the battle but instead finishes the one you started. If this woman has taught me anything it is to be true to myself and accept who I am as a person regardless of how others perceive me.

After Nonku confirmed MaKhumalo’s allegation, LaC and Mabusi denied that they were chatting about Sorisha. Mabusi quickly apologized to Sorisha after realizing they had made a mistake. In the absence of Nonku’s intervention, Mabusi LaC would have denied everything and painted Makhumalo as a liar.

For Nonku’s honesty and assertion that Makhumalo is stating the truth, we can be grateful. Makhumalo was set to look like a liar until LaC and Mabusi said they didn’t say anything. LaConco is a liar and a hypocrite who tries far too hard to appear mature when it isn’t. You can’t deny that Annie is childish, but you can’t deny that she sticks up for what she believes in. MaKhumalo remained authentic and true to herself the entire time.

The country is currently still in shock following the passing of Gomora actor Siyabonga Zubane who was one of the young talented stars in Mzansi. Zubane played the role of car hijacker and criminal Sdumo on the Mzansi Magic telenovela. He previously acted in Mzansi Magic’s telenovela Isibaya and seemed to have a glowing career ahead of him.
