Meet our new Miss SA: Lalela Mswane

Today, the 16th of October 2021 marks the end of the road in the Miss SA competition as the country witnesses the crowning of a great lady who will step onto reigning as the 2021 Miss South Africa. With the crowning event held in Cape Town at the Grand West Arena, it is Anele and Nico who took the stage to host and present the great title. Finally, the anticipation that’s been in many hearts will come to an end as the results are revealed.

Following the tough yet worthwhile road that the contestants had to journey on, only one could take the crown regardless of the many others that ran the race who were also deserving. As the audience or “fans” each crossed their fingers in hope for their favourite to win the prestigious crown, we believe that it is also the timing according to the universe, that decided amongst many other factors.

We can all be in a competition and aim for the number one spot, however, it is different factors that affect the outcome of our encounters in life. Though many came in and did their best, it is one lady, one queen, who stood out amongst the rest and claimed the spot as the universe agreed that it is indeed her time to shine.

With that said, it is the phenomenal Lalela Mswane who takes the crown home as Miss South Africa 2021. A good fight is what she fought and she had a great run in gaining love and support from fellow South Africans throughout the competition. From being a mere competitor amongst the many who entered from the competition’s early stages, to solidly securing her spot in the top 3, we can all agree that she deserves the crown and will make a great Miss SA.

Miss SA is thee platform to place women on a pedestal and give them a platform of influence over issues surrounding our country! All of the contestants were capable young women who will definitely make waves, even without the title itself!

The top 5 were Bianca Bezuidenhout, Jeanni Mulder, Lalela Mswane, Moratwe Masima and Zimi Mabunzi. Many viewers were disappointed that Kgothatso Dithebe was not in the top 5. Others attributed her absence from top 5 with being over-hyped on social media. The fact that she went back to try her luck the second time made other viewers feel that she should have been given a chance to proceed to top 5 for her fighting spirit!

The number was reduced to top 3 when Bianca Bezuidenhout and Jeanni Mulder were eliminated. This erupted debate on social media since claims were made that the show is slowly turning into Miss Black SA. However, I feel that the claims are unfounded because out of the top 5, the three ladies are the ones who were able to best articulate themselves as well as answer the questions posed to them sufficiently. To reduce their brilliance to their race is what is racist because after all, they were deserving of the positions!

In the end, Lalela Mswane took the title of Miss SA 2021! From the way she spoke and articulated herself, the title rests on stable shoulders that will represent us with pride! Congratulations to the queen in her reign and may she fulfil all that she used to campaign for her win!
