Drug addict son who killed his mother for money got life imprisonment

The Verulam Regional Court handed Shalendra Samdath (picture 2) a life sentence for the murder of 61-year-old Ormilla Samdath (picture 1), and the suspect was also given a 15-year sentence for robbery (picture provided by the Reaction Unit South Africa Facebook page).

The Reaction Unit South Africa news page reported in an article that Shalendra forced his mother to give him R3000 that she had received from a tenant who was renting their property yesterday, Saturday, December 9, 2022. After he got the money, he left the home and purportedly consumed drugs over the course of the evening.

Shalendra went to his mother’s workplace the following morning and asked for more money. His mother said no, so she forced him into her car and drove him home to avoid embarrassment. Shalendra fatally stabbed his mother when they got home, sadly.

He then left the scene in her red Toyota Corolla and went to use her bank card to withdraw money from an ATM.

After a few days, Shalendra was taken into custody, and the body of her mother was discovered on the kitchen floor at their home in Everest Heights (KwaZulu-Natal Province).

Since 2021, Shalendra has been in police custody while awaiting trial.
