South African singer, producer, pianist, dancer and performer from Zululand, Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi, known popularly as Toya DeLazy, celebrates her birthday today.

She shot the popularity charts for her signature music genre called AfroRave that cleverly infuses techno, drum & bass beats with Zulu lyrics. Toya DeLazy took home two awards at the 2013 SAMAs, including Newcomer of the Year.

The issue was the use of public bathrooms and the genders to which bathrooms are assigned. Social media went abuzz with Toya’s opinion with many of her followers feeling that the openly queer singer had crossed the line.

Those neutral to the issue attempted to correct her by showing how her remarks could be construed as transphobic, but she was having none of it.
