Radio Giant Grant Shakoane Dies A big loss to South African radio

Post main imageEarlier this morning, renowned South African broadcaster Tim Modise tweeted that he’d just learnt from Wilson Nkosi about the passing of legendary broadcaster the ‘Gentle Giant’ Grant Shakoane.

“I’ve just learned from Wilson Nkosi that ‘the Gentle Giant’ Grant Shakoane has passed on. Like many of us and his friends, I’m saddened by the news. I extend my sympathies to Ausi Albertina & family. I wish you strength. Modimo a le fodise.”
Our friend & big brother, the radio ‘gentle giant’ Grant Shakoane is in serious condition at one of the hospitals in Joburg. His wife informs me that he’s been in this battle for a while. Join me in praying for his recovery. We love you.”

Heartbroken by the news, sports broadcaster Robert Marawa sent his thoughts and prayers to the Shakoane family. “Thoughts and prayers to Ausi Albertina and her loving Family!! Such a deeply sad and emotional time for one who was so deeply loved and appreciated by many!!”In March 2020, he was a guest on the King David Studio and opened up about how he got into radio. “I was working for an advertising agency and what we did was record adverts and take them to the SABC and they would broadcast these things in different languages. I was in translations when we started.” He continued.

“I’d always frequent at the SABC, got used to them and as I came in and out, I heard there was going to be a radio station in English and there were going to be auditions. I caught it by ear and started lobbying the manager.” He eventually got a call to audition and the rest is history.

Ntate Shakoane will be greatly missed and his contribution to South African radio will never be forgotten.

Nandi Madida sparks bid debate

Nandi Madida has joined the movement which seeks to make tertiary education free and accessible. The actress also wants government to create jobs for the youth as well saying their respective communities will become empowered.
Since the whole movement began, South African celebs joined hands with the youth in demanding government’s intervention. Free concerts were organised to raise funds, some even took to the streets to protest with the students demanding for a basic right.

Taking to Instagram is the Black Is King actress says this will be beneficial to communities if jobs and education is made accessible to the youth.

I want to see free quality education and employment in our country. The youth is asking for a basic right, a noble one as well. To empower themselves and change their lives and the lives of their communities for good,” she wrote.
I pray for the day the government truly sees the level and conditions that children are being taught in “And Care” that will be the beginning of a road that will not only build our children but show them value and love,” wrote Lungi Naidoo.

“We need to be having talks about how we can inject the injection of funds into our education system in order to even achieve this free education, we can’t be advocating for free education and jobs without radical change in the system, as much as I’m for free education, we should also not compromise the quality of education given to our African people in these institutions,” commented Mpho Thlathla.

“I cannot agree more with you. The reason why black South Africans aren’t able to build and manage their own wealth simply comes down to education. The level of education that is given to black and white South Africans is definitely not up to the same level and standards and access to the higher standards of education for blacks is limited to only those who can only afford it,” commented sindz.
