Tsotsi (a township slang word for a thug) is a Mzansi film that premiered in 2006 in South African Cinemas . It is under the crime drama genre. Gavin Hood was the brains behind the writing of the script, as well as the production of the movie. The setting is Jo’burg, “Alex”, South Africa in the early 2000’s.

The movie focuses on the life story of David/Tsotsi (played by Presley Chweneyagae) and how he became who he became. We see him going down memory lane and being beaten by his father as a kid while his mom was fighting cancer. He later runs away from home and goes to live on the streets. The gang decides to go rob a house in the Suburbs of Jo’burng. They search the house of John, a character that is potrayed by Rapulana Seiphemo. When the wife of John comes home, Tsotsi decides to shoot her and steal her car. He is in disbelief after finding out that there’s a three months old baby in the car.

Tsotsi develops a bond for the baby and it makes him soft; perhaps because he was abused as a child. After taking care of the child for several days, Tsotsi takes the baby to his parents, but gets shot by police when he takes out the baby’s bottle from his pocket— thinking he’s reaching out for a gun.

Zola 7 and the great Vusi Mahlasela were the voices responsible for the film’s soundtracks.

The film has won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, making it the first Mzansi film and first African film not made in the French language to win the the former.
