JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Trevor Manuel, the previous finance minister, is asking the authorities to compel journalists JJ Tabane and Sbusiso ‘Dj Sbu’ Leope to compensate him R100,000 in fines for defaming him.

Tabane claimed Manuel was engaged in the founding of the Congress of the People (Cope) in 2008 during a podcast interview conducted by Leope, a claim the former minister dismissed as untrue and unlawful.

Manuel has petitioned the Johannesburg High Court to have the case heard as soon as possible after Tabane failed to perform with his requests for an apology.

Manuel is asking the judiciary to order Tabane and his presenter on the Hustler’s Corner SA podcast Leope to retract and stop posting the allegation that he assisted build the breakaway group Cope as a representative of the ANC’s central executive committee.
