Zandile Khumalo Faced Tough Questions During Cross Examination In Court

Zandile Khumalo, a state witness in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, faced some tough questions during cross examination today at the Pretoria High Court.

She is the first witness in this case after the trial was started afresh under a new judge. Lawyer of accused one and two was asking Khumalo some tough questions concerning the identity of the accused.

In an interview that Zandile Khumalo once had, she made a remark about the intruders being in masks most of the time and that she was not able to get a good glance at them.

Earlier today, she told the legal representative during cross examination that she was certain that accused number two was one of the intruders she saw on the day that Senzo Meyiwa was shot.

Lawyer of the accused said he was making emphasis on the issue of masks as he wanted to get clarity from the witness. He said there have been some inconsistencies in the testimony of the witness, hence he kept on asking about it.

Social critics argued that the witness is being exposed as someone who cannot be a reliable witness as she changes her statements depending on who is asking her.

The court also heard that accused number two was tortured by police in a bid to admit that he had committed the crime. His lawyer narrated how his client was beaten into signing two statements. He said the accused denies that he was involved in the commission of the offense.

The judge presiding over the Senzo Meyiwa trial has given a stern warning to prosecutors and their witness, against unnecessary delays. His remarks were in reaction to the State’s request for adjournment.

Social critics, reacting to this, said the judge is correct to call out prosecutors for delaying tactics. They said there is now hope that Senzo Meyiwa will get justice.
