Tzaneen Municipality accused of only fixing mud roads for Miss SA, Ndavi Nokeri’s homecoming

Ndavi Nokeri recently became our new Miss SA. She hails from Tzaneen in Limpopo and is the first Tsonga winner. An avid fan favourite, her win was not surprising but well deserved. She won the hearts of so many people. But the latest controversy is quite strange.

The municipality of her home town is being accused of buying face.

Ndavi is quite beloved. She claimed to be planning a homecoming to celebrate with her community which will be momentous for the Gabaza area. But is this the reason why road works are under way in her area?

An upset user on Twitter had something to say about the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. They posted a photo of a tractor removing a layer of the road, likely in preparation to install proper roads instead of mud. The timing is quite suspicious.

The user angrily wrote, “This is only happening because #MissSA2022 #ndavinokeri is going home next week. Shame on you Greater Tzaneen Municipality.” They were clearly perturbed by the action of the government.

People took to make their own comments about the situations.

One user wrote, “yah no the lack of development and infrastructure in the villages surrounding Tzaneen is actually shocking. don’t get me started in the roads yerrr and there’s no network 😡”

While another user wrote, “Ja it’s sad that it took her winning a whole Miss SA for them to do the bare minimum. I guess she really is a blessing to her community.”

A final user wrote, “This is not only happening at Tzaneen its happening all over SA the only time the street is being repair is when the will be media coverage. That’s ANC.”

This was concerning to me for many reasons. The main one being that, without Ndavi, the infrastructure issue would have been left unresolved. It seems when there is media involved, the budget opens up. The roads will look good but will it be a quick fix that will fall apart quickly?
