Tribute to the Zimbabwean gospel legend Pastor Charles Charamba: Opinion

Charles Charamba is a Zimbabwean gospel musician and a former pastor in the Apostolic Faith Mission Church of Zimbabwe (AFM).

He has since started his church Rooted in Christ Ministries. He is arguably one of the best gospel artists in Zimbabwe

 
Charamba’s music is part of the top selling gospel albums in Zimbabwe since the early 2000s. He has toured both Great Britain and the United States, and throughout southern Africa.

One of Charamba’s most famous songs is “Machira Chete”. His wife, Olivia (née Maseko), is also a gospel singer, and performs with him on stage and on his albums; they are often called the “First Family of Gospel”.

On the music front, he is backed by his band, Fishers of Men. His most popular songs include Machira Chete, Buruka, Nyika, Nyika YeZimbabwe and many others. Charles Charamba was born on 27 April 1971 in Mudzi, Mashonaland East Province.

He did his primary and secondary education at Masarakufa Primary School and Masarakufa Secondary School in Mudzi respectively.

He attended the Zimbabwe College of Music.

In 1988, he joined AFM after converting to Christianity and was baptised in 1989.

He is married to Olivia Charamba and they have five children; 3 daughters Daughters: Shalom, Eternity, Tagamuchira and 2 sons Timukudze and Aveneni.

In 1995, Charamba recorded seven singles and in 1997, he recorded his first album titled Tinashe Akatendeka.

This album made a huge impact and introduced Charamba to the gospel music fraternity.

In 1998, Charamba enrolled at the Living Waters Theology Seminary, a theological school established by AFM. Whilst studying for his Diploma In Theology, Charamba continued to pursue his musical career.

In 1998, he released his second album titled Johane 3:16, this album catapulted Charamba to stardom as it became an instant hit and a favourite of many gospel fans.

Charamba has toured many countries such as South Africa, Australia, United States of America, United Kingdom and many others.

In September 2011, Charamba graduated with a National Certificate in Music from the Zimbabwe College of Music. In 2013, he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Ethnomusicology from the Africa University.
