Finance minister Tito Mboweni is not a happy man after news broke out that Shepard Bushiri and his wife fled South Africa yesterday.
It is alleged that the Bushiri’s had diplomatic passports and they skipped South Africa yesterday.
In a social media post purported to be Bushiri who posted it, he argues that he didn’t feel safe anymore in South Africa as threats were being made for him, his wife and and his family.
“Our coming to Malawi, hence, is a tactical withdrawal from the Republic of South Africa solely meant to preserve our lives,” he said.
Bushiri further adds that since 2015 what he and his wife have faced in South Africa was persecution not prosecution.
Speculation however has it that Malawian president might have helped Bushiri to escape as he was in South Africa and departed on Friday 13 November that’s when the Bushiri’s also skipped the country to Malawi.
Bushiri also made five demands he want the South African government to do before they can proceed with the case among them; he want the South African government to assure them that their bail will not be revoked.
Tito Mboweni is however failing to believe the speculations that Malawian president Lazarus Chakwera might have helped the Bushiri’s to escape and cites that it is unbelievable.
“A whole Head of State smuggling a fugitive from justice? Tell me it’s fake news. Unbelievable! Must be fake . Has to be. Must must not spread fake news,” he said.
