The Ranaka’s kick off with a tricky game that deals with a surname issue

The Ranaka’s are back and not without a good dose of drama but we wouldn’t tune in without it!
They’re honest with their feelings and wear their hearts on their sleeves. But perhaps a little more caution wouldn’t hurt.

The premiere began peacefully enough but soon took a turn for the worst.

The family gave us an intro that reminded us of exactly who they are and I was intrigued. We got to see Dineo in her traditional attire and I had to remember that she is a sangoma now. I wrongly assumed that would come with a little more introspection and listening but I was wrong.

The game night that went straight to HELL

Thando and KG planned a family game night with the intention of bringing everyone together to have some fun. Sounds pretty innocent right? Nope. It definitely didn’t end up that way at all. Everyone arrived and the drinks were flowing as difficult questions were tossed around by everyone.

I thought to myself when the game was announced that it wouldnt go well. Putting the Ranaka’s in one room together and asking them to be frank? But it was going swimmingly until the surname issue came around and Dineo put her foot it in.

Their father was emotional as he explained in the confessional about running away from home where his stepfather was abusive and having the apartheid system fail him by giving him the wrong last name. It was clearly out of his hands, perhaps there was a better way to broach the subject.

However, Dineo became very accusatory about the surname issue, saying that her parents failed her but hadn’t failed the boys. It got worse when Manaka was trying to make a point about last names and Dineo just wouldn’t let her finish. It was frustrating! I could understand why Manaka ended up in tears.

Personal Thoughts
I didn’t realise that families are the same everywhere we go. That there will always be one who looks down on the others. One who is disrespectful. One who is quiet to their own demise. Taking sides during arguments. It is so messy. The way drama can come from any area is truly impeccable.

I just wish that like the Ranaka’s, we could all come together afterwards and apologise and make amends. That part is often lacking and causes division amongst families.
