Thembi is being comforted by President Cyril Ramaphosa at her husband’s funeral.

Her death comes over a year after that of her husband, who died from complications related to the Covid-19 disease in January 2021.

Meanwhile, Artwel Mthembu, the late minister’s cousin, revealed to EyeWitness News that her untimely death was caused by an undisclosed illness. Indicating that she died at a Tshwane hospital after being admitted there.

 

 

 

 

 

“Thembi was not well for the last couple of weeks, she lost her life in hospital,” Artwell said.

He also expressed pain at her death, indicating that the family had not fully recovered from Jackson’s death, and Thembi’s death is a cruel blow to them.

“What happened is that it just opened up the wounds because if you remember we lost Jackson last year,” he added.

Unlike other spouses of high-profile government officials, Thembi, who was a nurse by profession, was quite commendably never accused of being involved in corrupt activities or being a beneficiary of irregular tenders. She was as clean as hyssop and dispensed her services to the people with diligence.

The late minister invariably spoke about her in glowing terms with regard to that aspect.

Indeed, her death is a devastating blow to the family, particularly the 6 children which the couple shared, they have sadly become orphans within the space of a year.

One would not be surprised if President Ramaphosa attends her funeral, because he enjoyed a great comradeship with her husband, whose immense contribution towards Ramaphosa’s election at the Nasrec ANC elective conference in 2017 could not be understated.
