South Africans and Zimbabweans Argue on Twitter Over Lucky Dube’s Nationality

The ace South African Reggae music star Lucky Dube is one of Africa’s finest renowned musicians who never lived long to enjoy his musical career.

In 2007, Lucky Dube was shot dead by armed robbers after dropping off two of his three children at an uncle’s house. He was driving his Chrysler 300C, which the assailants were after. According to the police, the assailants didn’t recognise him, and thought he was a Nigerian.


 
Five men were arrested in relation to the crime, but two were released while three of them were found responsible and were convicted on the 31st of March, 2009.

They were eventually sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, some South African and Zimbabwean social media users have engaged themselves in war of words over the nationality of Lucky Dube.

Martins: “Lucky Dube is a Zimbabwean actually. His father is from Zimbabwe while his mother is South African from Soweto. His father left his mother and never came back home probably he’s dead”.

Hlalukana Maduna: “Lucky Dube was born in South Africa, he had a South African birth certificate,he had a South African ID book he never had a Zimbabwean ID book was never born in Zimbabwe he even got buried in South Africa”.

Joel Diamond: “They were jealous of him. Thinking the man inside the car was from Nigeria driving that expensive car. So they tried to take him out on realizing it was Lucky Dube”.
