Shoki Mmola ditched Skeem Saam for theatre

South African theatre has grown in leaps and bounds.

It is not surprising to note that Shoki Mmola quit Skeem Saam so that she could hone her skills in theatre.

That is according to a report in the Sunday World. Mmola is well known for her role as Celia Kunutu on Skeem Saam.

Viewers were left in despair after it was revealed that she would be leaving the show.

“I decided to leave Skeem Saam after playing this character for ten years because I wanted a new challenge. It’s time for me to step into a new universe.

“When I wake up I had the same face as Celia every day, so it felt like I was in the company.I wanted and had to choose something different,” said Momora. , Mmola had a role in the globally acclaimed and award-winning play Ruined, which premiered in South Africa.

Mmola plays the role of Salima and tells the story of a real woman living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo who was brutalized during the civil war.

The story talks about Salima who was kidnapped from her home while her husband was away. Her abductors did her favorite thing in front of her child and killed her baby while she was watching.

Having done that, the abductors then took them to places where they had to struggle every day to survive, but when they left they went to a tavern or a brothel in Nandi, where it was also violent.

But it was better than where they were they were coming from. It piqued Mmola’s interest in the war and made her wonder how many women in the world had experienced the same thing.

The characters speak Lingala, Swahili, and French, and faithfully recreate the stories of the women.

Mmola said she hoped to use theatre to tell the genuine women’s story.
