Songwriter, singer and guitarist Bulelwa “Zahara” Mkutukana was born in Nobember 9th, 1887. She is an Eastern Cape native; from a place called “Phumlani” (just outside East London) to be specific.

Zahara took South Africa by storm in 2011 when she first emerged through TS Records with her debut album, Loliwe. Every song on the album was literally a hit—the album was so hot that it’s first issue was sold out in just 72 hours and almost 3 weeks later she hit double platinum status in Mzansi by going over the 100,000 sales threshold. Avictory that would make her the second musician after Brenda Fassie to reach this figure in that number of days. The following year, the song won her 8 SAMA awards.

In 2013, Zahara released her second studio album, Phendula which won her three SAMA awards. Things were really looking up for her but all too sudden, she lost her baby brother who got murdered in East London. Her engagement with Amaza (radio personality) ended while she was also fighting with TS records over money.

Zahara became a laughing stock and people called her an alcoholic.She was just struggling with depression and needed SA to support her.
