Samthing Soweto influenced my music. But I’m no copycat: Getting to know Daliwonga

His career is going well. Inspired by Brenda Fassie’s 1989 song, he recently collaborated with Mas Musiq to release the single 10 Kilometres (10KM). Daliwonga Matiwane, a singer and songwriter, tells ZiMoja that his song is all about heartbreak. Although the song’s melody and lyrics were influenced by Brenda Fassie’s hit, we did not sample the beat, he states. My song is not about me going through heartbreak. We had to make the song around Valentine’s Day because we had to give it to people. Daliwonga has also been named the new Cîroc ambassador, succeeding Bonang Matheba, David Tlale, and Da Les, as well as local and international stars Banky W and D’banj. I was able to quickly decide to join the brand. Ciroc is for rock stars like P. Diddy and Cassper Nyovest. They seem to fit the Daliwonga brand—a happy boy from Soweto who enjoys music and people. The vocalist divulges some fascinating details about his personal life.

Daliwonga places a high value on family. He informs ZiMoja that Dalindyebo, his twin brother, is a music producer. We differ greatly; He is different from me, but we have a lot in common. He is quieter, shorter, and lighter-skinned, but we see him as siyafana and smile. He can sing, but he prefers to work in production. He has collaborated with De Mthuda, DJ Stokie, and numerous others. Sir Trill, a musician and Daliwonga’s cousin, is also related to him.

His influence

The Abo Mvelo singer was born and raised in Soweto, where he listened to a lot of RnB, Afto-Pop, and American artists. I also did gospel music. I was a choir director at the church. That had a significant impact on both my personality and style.

His concept of fame before his career took off consisted solely of him performing on stage. However, it changed. I needed to comprehend the significance of focus, discipline, and hard work. Negativity is a common source of distraction. I never participate in discussions on social media. My preference is to keep my private life private.

COMPARISONS

He is frequently compared to singers; Samthing Soweto, Sir Trill, Young Stunna, and a lot of others, but he doesn’t care. People are pitted against each other, there are numerous comparisons, and unnecessary competition. I attempt to escape that. The wave was started by someone in Soweto, as with any style or genre. He was an inspiration to many of us, not just me. Getting into the scene, he was the best singer, and he waved to us. However, I don’t imitate. I believe that people can tell the difference between me and him. And as an artist, you will fail if you focus too much on that. Being human, I occasionally get offended, but I don’t take comparisons seriously. We are cool, I work with the brothers. I haven’t worked with Sam yet, but I’m sure I will in time.
