The Real Housewives of Durban thrives on classism. All the ladies are living a soft life but some are richer than others, and viewers watch the reality show just for that reason. I think we find it fascinating that although most people are living from hand to mouth, there’s a handful who get to live luxurious lives that we can only dream of.
MaKhumalo joined the Real Housewives of Durban S2 cast and there have been mixed emotions around the necessity of her presence. The glitz and glamour around her life have been interrogated quite a few times, but she has an amazing fanbase so viewers were excited to have her!
Thobile and LaConco know each other outside the reality show, and you’d expect that LaConco tries to help her fit in. The ladies (S1) already know each other, and Thobile joining the cast means she’ll be sometimes excluded from conversations that build from previous experience of each other. As someone who knows Thobile, I expected that LaConco considers this and puts her under her wing until she’s comfortable.
It came as a shock that as soon as LaConco saw that Thobile was their host for the episode, her face became sour and demeaning. Apart from annoyance that she was late, it looked like there was a history of beef.
Even more shocking is the fact that she called her a nobody. So what’s the story there? LaConco is closer to MaYeni and probably reckoned that by rudely brushing off Thobile, her loyalty to MaYeni will be proven. Or, MaYeni has sold an ugly picture of Thobile to LaConco.
I think it’s okay not to like everyone around you but for her to go as far as insulting Thobile and calling her a nobody, shows that she’s not the angel that people have thought her to be.
