Chester Williams’ rugby journey commenced in Paarl, a town known for its rich sporting heritage. Under the guidance of a coach at Maties, he honed his skills and attributes that would later define his career, both as a player and coach.

 

At just 21, he took to the field for Western Province in the Currie Cup, facing racial hardships as apartheid still cast its shadow over the nation. However, he remained steadfast in his belief that his talent would shine brighter than the colour of his skin—a lesson instilled by his uncle, Avril Williams, himself a former Springbok.SPRINGBOK DEBUT
Over eight years, Chester made 63 appearances for Western Province, contributing to their success in reaching the finals in 1995 and 1998 and clinching the title in 1997. His abilities as a winger and his dedication to the team stood out.

In 1993, at the age of 23, Chester Williams made his debut for the Springboks against Argentina. He made an immediate impact, contributing to a resounding 52-23 victory, including a try of his own. His performance paved the way for his inclusion in the historic 1995 Rugby World Cup squad.

During the tournament, Williams etched his name into history by scoring four tries in the quarterfinal against Samoa. He stood as the lone player of colour in the Springbok lineup that would go on to win the championship.

A SHINING CAREER
His contributions transcended the sport, symbolizing hope and unity in a nation undergoing profound transformation. Chester Williams amassed 27 caps for South Africa and scored 14 tries, amassing 70 points.FAREWELL TO A HERO
Tragically, on 6 September 2019, Chester Williams passed away at the age of 49 due to a heart attack. His untimely death left South Africa mourning the loss of a true hero who had so much more to give.
