In spite of the passage of three decades since its initial release, Sarafina remains one of the finest exports to come out of South Africa.
Even if you don’t recognize the importance of June 16th, films like SARAFINA shed light on our vibrant Youth culture. Mbongeni Ngema penned this stunning play, which is somewhat inspired by events leading up to Nelson Mandela’s release from jail on June 16, 1976.
The 1992 film Sarafina moved us deeply because it depicts the bravery and fortitude of young school children protesting for what they believe in, and because it is heartbreaking to see police ruthlessly slaughter innocent people in the name of law and order. We should never forget the brave students who battled for the rights we now take for granted, even if much time has passed.
So let’s take a trip down memory lane and reflect on the fantastic show that will still be entertaining 30 years from now.
