Rat found crawling through Pick ‘n’ Pay Deli meats in Cape Town

Food safety had always been of the upmost importance for people. This is the reason why there are health and safety regulations involved in every aspect of the food experience in South African. Restaurants and supermarkets are amongst those held to that standard

This wasn’t the case for a Pick n Pay at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

It is alarming anytime a rat is involved because they are notoriously unclean rodents and they can invade homes. It is much worse though when you spot one in a place that serves food to people! This is what happened to a TikTok user while she was doing some shopping.

They were near the deli section where all the hams are kept and at first it is easy to assume the exorbitant price was the issue. You quickly realise however, that there is a rat crawling on the ham and looking quite comfortable there as though it is a regular.

I can’t describe the amount of terror I felt having seen that and knowing I had deli meat in the fridge. I had to wonder if the workers were alerted to this and how it would be rectified.

There are food inspectors across the country and one can only hope they’ll be made aware of this infringement. The video has amassed 436.2k views, its obviously doing the rounds. But in typical South African fashion there was a comedian in the comments.

One funny user put a positive spin on the whole thing and wrote, ” just say you haven’t seen Ratatouille babe…it’s okay if you don’t know that he’s just picking the best cut for fine dining 🫠”

This issue is still quite serious though and I hope management will be made aware of it.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments…💬
