On 28 July, rapper and presenter, ProVerb –real name Tebogo Sidney Thapelo Thekisho got to MC at a recent fundraising event that was held at The Capital Apartments in Sandton which aimed to raise funds for the skills development of Gender Based Violence (GBV) survivors.GBV is a very serious crime in South Africa. According to the National Institute of Health, “South Africa is considered to be the rape capital of the world with 10 818 rape cases reported in the first quarter of 2022. The rate at which women are killed by intimate partners in this country is five times higher than the global average.”

Radio and TV presenter ProVerb, anti apartheid activist Professor Thuli Madonsela, and philanthropist Angela Yeung were among the names included at the non-profit organisation Impilo Collection Foundation and Thuli Madonsela Foundation Fundraising Gala Dinner that took place in Sandton recently.

According to the events pamphlets which were circulated on social media, the proceeds raised at the gala dinner will be used to build an educational centre for GBV survivors. The event’s attendees were sold tickets that cost R960 and asked to come wearing their traditional attires. The pre-sold tickets included a three-course meal and guests were also entertained with drum café and line-dancing.Because of the alarming GBV rate in the country, Limpopo MEC, Rogers Monama recently announced that the sale of alcohol will be prohibited from 00:00 in the province. He said that he believed there is a clear link between alcohol and GBV crimes. He hoped the newly implemented liquor act will make a difference in statistics. The new liquor act is effective as of 1 August.

“As the province, we didn’t just wake up and sign our own Limpopo liquor act. We are one of the two provinces that I think are still operating in terms and in line with [the] national liquor act of 1989 which I think is a problem to some of the things that we are experiencing on a daily basis; the number of the crime rates that we are experiencing as a province and all the other social allies; so, we are trying to synchronize the processes,” Monama said during an interview on Newzroom Afrika.
