According to some theories, higher education leads to better labour market outcomes and improves future income through better career paths. But these theories have been criticised in countries with high rates of unemployment, where even graduates often struggle to find employment, in places like South Africa.
This issue of unemployment and many other issues surrounding South African graduates was recently brought to the spotlight after these two graduates decided to wear their graduation gowns to fight off the cold weather.
This picture is currently trending on the socials and it has left many with mixed feelings.
Zoleka commented by saying, “In SA when you are a graduate and unemployed you can”
“Cause the temperature is – 1 Bachelor’s Degrees Celsius.” Bee Kay responded
A lot of hilarious comments were shared on Twitter regarding this picture, but the issue of unemployment and being graduated topped the agenda.
South Africa has the largest share of mismatched workers, with skills mismatches of more than 50% and the lowest productivity levels, meaning that unemployment is a huge problem. Hopefully these two graduates in the picture are employed, and they just found a creative way to make use of their graduation gowns.
