Rappers AKA and Kwesta have defended their credentials and longevity, after radio personality Scoop Makhathini claimed the pair should pack it up and let the young ‘uns take over.

Scoop got the block hella hot when, in a recent Popcast YouTube episode, he said he would love it if Cassper, AKA and Kwesta took a break from making music.

“A lot of dudes who are veterans in the game, I feel should take a recording break. AKA, Kwesta, Cassper, I feel like should go a year and not release music, and just chill. A part of me will always gravitate to what they have to say because I know their story, but I feel there is a lot of n**gas that we may not be playing who are making better music than the established guys.”

He added that the upcoming crop of rappers needed a chance to shine.

AKA caught wind of the comments, and in a late night Twitter session said he had fought to be where he is today.

“When I forced my way into this industry. I had to do it among some of the greatest names SA has ever seen.

“This is hip-hop, not creche. Nobody ‘gets’ a f**king chance.”

The Jika hitmaker said many upcoming artists think they deserve a chance when all they had to do was fight for one.

“Listen here, nobody owes you s**t,” he told them.

Addressing fans, he said he didn’t think it was fair that they had to go a year without him releasing tracks so that “skrrr skrrr can dominate”.

Kwesta shared AKA’s sentiments, slamming Scoop and claiming new rappers didn’t need the presenter fighting for them.

Legendary actress, Mary Twala was laid to rest on Thursday, less than a week after she died at Park Lane Hospital in Johannesburg.

South Africans who watched her work on television over the years, industry colleagues and family, including her son Somizi Mhlongo, paid tribute to the actress.

Here are five must-read stories about Mary.

Her death

On July 4 Somizi shared via social media that his mother had died.

On Twitter he shared her picture and captioned it: “My tree has fallen … lala Ma.”

In a lengthy Instagram post, Somizi said his mother died on his late father’s birthday.

“I’m shattered to the core, but I’d be selfish if I don’t release her.”Tributes

Social media was filled with pictures of Mary as South Africans paid moving tributes to the woman many called an icon.

The presidency’s Twitter page shared a picture of her receiving the Order of Ikhamanga from President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2019.Family speaks

Family spokesperson and Mary’s granddaughter, Phumzile Twala, said the family was shattered.

She told TshisaLIVE Mary had been struggling with diabetes and made many trips to hospital.

She died as Somizi and her brother were on their way to pay her a visit.

“You know that she is old but she was so strong. She had pulled through so many times before that we thought she might be strong enough again.Final farewell

Mary’s funeral service was held at the Grace Bible Cchurch in Soweto. Mourners were limited to 50 people due to lockdown restrictions.

Industry colleagues, including Connie Chiume and Presley Chweneyagae, shared their tributes virtually.

Somizi paid a moving tribute to his mother, saying he may have lost her on earth but he has gained the most powerful ancestor.

“I am so at peace with what my mother has achieved. She has seen me walk down the aisle, she has seen her granddaughters.”Memories

A video of Somizi speaking fondly about his mother during an interview on SABC3’s Real Talk resurfaced earlier this week as South Africans paid tribute to the actress.

He opened up about how his mother supported him when he struggled with his health and finances, and described her resilience as the same as that of actor Chuck Norris.

LOOK: Mohale shows off his diamonds after Mary Twala’s funeral

Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo. Picture: InstagramMohale Motaung-Mhlongo ruffled some feathers on Twitter with some branding him as insensitive and a clout chaser.

This comes after he posted a short video of a diamond ring he received after the funeral of his mother-in-law, Mary Twala.

The ring was a gift from his husband, media personality Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung, for his birthday. In the video, Mohale turns his hand around to show off the ring which has more than 10 diamonds while Toni Braxton’s ‘Breathe Again’ plays in the background.

“My husband bought me the most beautiful diamond ring for my birthday. Thank you baby @somizi – HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. #25”, he tweeted. While many social media users sent the MTV Shuga star birthday wishes, some acknowledged that having to bury his mother-in-law on his birthday could not have been something easy to do.

However many others felt that Mohale decided to show off his gift at the wrong time and should have waited.

Tweeps responding to the tweet told Mohale that the day was about honouring the veteran actress who died last week.

Her funeral service was held at the Grace Bible Church in Soweto on Thursday.

As Mohale hit number one on the local trends list, other users suggested the he keeps certain aspects of his life with Somizi private.
