‘Dinner at Somizi’s’ is packed with flavour but missing some ingredients

Seriously, even when he makes a few gaffes on camera, on social media or on the radio, his colourful personality always gets him redemption.
He’s like that effervescent we take every day, refreshing.

That’s what I’ve admired about him as a celebrity. He may use the wrong words when communicating or Somizi-fy the words, but it is endearing all the same because he owns it.

This brings me to Mzansi Magic’s “Dinner at Somizi’s”. With my profound appreciation for food, which is deeply-embedded in my cultural background, I am drawn to cooking shows, in general.

Also, his entertaining cooking videos on Instagram deepened my curiosity.

The concept of the cooking show also holds much appeal. An intimate conversation with industry friends while breaking bread, how could it not.

Rami Chuene, one of my favourite actresses on the small screen, made for a fabulous first guest. She brought her own glam and vibe to the dinner party.

First, though, let me share my thoughts on episode one.

There are a few things I think will serve the show better if fine-tuned like camera angles. It’s disconcerting when the host is talking to the camera but is not looking at it directly. This is a no-no as it steals away from the intended intimate feel.

Secondly, we are in a Covid-19 mindset. We need to have some social distancing in the kitchen. It felt very cluttered with husband Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo, Chuene as well as Somizi, side-by-side while preparing the food. Perhaps, it could be shot from a different angle, where everyone can look a bit more relaxed.

That’s the drawbacks, which is outweighed by the positives.

On the show, the banter is effortless, cheeky and borderline risque. Mohale, by the way, makes for a great interviewer. He framed his questions, especially those hot potato ones, beautifully. Now the whole of South Africa knows where Chuene stands with regards to The Fergusons. Beyond that, we got to know her better as an artist, mother and powerful woman.

This show combines two things that Somizi is in his element doing: cooking and chatting.

It’s sociable, unpretentious (Somizi will no doubt fine-tune those plating and serving skills in time) and a laugh. In these stressful times of Covid-19, “Dinner at Somizi’s” is a wonderful and welcome addition to SA’s local slate. Tonight’s guest is singer and songwriter, Zahara.

‘Uzalo’ star Gugu Gumede says schools should close until after Covid-19 peak

Gugu Gumede. Picture: Instagram“Uzalo” star Gugu Gumede, who plays the infamous Mamlambo on Mzansi’s number one soapie, is taking the government to task, urging for schools to be closed until after the coronavirus peak.

The actor voiced her opinion on the ongoing debate about shutting down schools, as the number of learners and teachers contracting the coronavirus is spreading rapidly.
Taking to Instagram Instagram on Wednesday, the 28-year-old wrote: “So as I was saying, close schools until the peak passes! Your argument may be that the virus is not that dangerous to kids, but they’ll pass it on to their elders, who could die, which could lead to more impoverished child-headed households. Don’t follow 1st-world trends in a 3rd-world country.”This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech during the coronavirus imbizo on Wednesday.

He weighed in on the call by teacher unions on the closure of schools ahead of the peak of the virus.

Schooling for Grade 7 and 12 learners resumed in June after the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, announced that all schools will reopen, despite many concerns that arose regarding the safety of learners and teachers.

Many South Africans including celebrities have since expressed their fears of the virus spreading, especially with the reopening of schools.

In May, media personalities Khanyi Mbau and Uyanda Mbuli urged South Africans to join them in signing a petition for schools to be shut down for the remainder of the 2020 academic year.

The petition is currently sitting at 179 935 signatures.

Schools closed in March shortly before President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a level 5 national lockdown.

Is Mr Ngubane Linda Or Mtho’s Father In Housekeepers?

Housekeepers season 2 has got viewers hooked and as more episodes are aired twists and turns seem to be the order of the day in the Mzansi Magic show. In season 2 we meet Linda now a housekeeper in a new household and doing some undercover work for good cop gone bad, Conway and if viewers thought all the Zwide drama was left behind but that is clearly not the case because the Zwide drama is still lingering on.

In last week’s episode the matriach of the Ngubane family, Noli, surprised viewers when she seemed to know Linda’s mother June Ndlovu.

Noli was speaking to her husband Clive Ngubane who had confronted her about whether she helped kill June Ndlovu to which Noli calmly replied that she hated June but had no reason to kill her.

Clive Ngubane seemed to have a soft spot for June to the point that he almost had a heart attack after the conversation he had with his wife about June.

Could June and Clive have had an affair and have produced a child, some tweeps seem to think so.
