DIFF manager Chipo Zhou chats about all things ‘DIFF’

“This Is Not A Burial, It's A Resurrection”. Picture: Suppliedhe Durban International Film Festival has set its sights on putting on a film spectacular for the country despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

As the festival goes digital this year, film lovers can still get their dose of doccies, features and short films available free online.

Festival manager Chipo Zhou said while the format will be very different, they still expect to deliver a high-quality experience.

“I am humbled to be a part of the first virtual edition; the last few years have been nothing short of an amazing experience. We will have our opening night and closing night events at the Durban Country Club as drive-in screenings and we hope that will create a similar kind of hype as our previous events have done,” said Zhou.

Although the festival is virtual, it is geolocked to South Africa, but Zhou said it has garnered a lot of interest in participation. And they anticipate that the 59 shows from 33 countries worldwide will be sold out.

This year bookings will be reserved, starting a day before the festival, and there will be a limited number of daily tickets available for films which will be valid for streaming for 24 hours.

“All the films on offer are worth watching. “Our Lady of the Nile”, “Lusala”, “This Is Not A Burial, It’s A Resurrection”, “Softie” and “143 Sahara Street” are just a few of my favourites on this year’s selection,” Zhou said.

This year’s festival also sees a few changes to the usual structure.

“Our screenings have expanded into greater KwaZulu-Natal with our drive-through programme, which we are very excited about. The isiZulu Scriptwriting Residency is under way, a programme we piloted last year that will now be a permanent feature of the Isiphethu programme. Our partnership with the US means our industry workshops for the Isiphethu will have a greater international engagement. And there will be lots of social interaction with film-makers, great films and engaging workshops,” she said.

Zhou said despite the pandemic, everyone banded together to make DIFF possible.

“Our stakeholders were very supportive. Covid-19 has affected all spheres of life and so we were very grateful to have had everyone’s support,” she said.

Happy birthday to the beautiful, Ntsiki Mazwai. 🤩🥳🥰😀 Wishing you a blessed day!

Ntsiki Mazwai. Picture: InstagramControversial poet Ntsiki Mazwai has fired back at the presenters and producers of SABC 3 talk show, “Trending SA”. This comes after an interview this week in which she felt she was attacked by the show’s presenters.

Viewers of the show, which recently went through a rebranding that saw MaBlerh, Elma Smit and Refiloe Mpakanyane replace Pabi Moloi, Kuli Roberts, Nina Hastie and Musa Mthombeni as presenters, agreed with Ntsiki.

Many viewers tweeted their frustrations about what they labelled an attack on the star when the show’s presenters took her to task on whether she was a Twitter troll. They also went into the Twitter archives and dug up tweets about Ntsiki which viewers said were nasty and unnecessary.

After the interview, Ntsiki took to Twitter to express how she regretted agreeing to do the interview.

“I can’t believe this TV interview put me in such a horrible space on my birthday week…. Like Wow. You guys just want me to be miserable nje. It’s amazing. SA media is amazing. To call me all the way there just to try break my spirit”, she tweeted.

She went on to say that she was humiliated for ratings.

“It’s amazing how tv producers don’t mind humiliating someone for ratings. I wasn’t even paid for this shoot. Thank you to all of you who came to my defense. I’m sad for the new presenters who just tainted their energy for cheap publicity that didn’t even work.”

IN MEMES | ‘Skeem Saam’ fans think Leshole’s name is affecting his life negatively

Having run out of reasons for why Skeem Saam writers seem intent on making Leshole suffer for the rest of his life, fans of the popular soapie have resorted to thinking that perhaps the meaning of his name is ruining things for him.

The common thread fans have seen since meeting Leshole is the fact that he truly has to fight his way out of constant difficult situations and nothing ever comes easy for him.

In fact, every single time it seems he has something to celebrate, life throws him yet another curve ball that forces him to fight for his life.

The literal translation of the name Leshole is soldier and fans are convinced that the poor young man is living up to his name. Battle after battle, Leshole never seems to catch a break.

If it’s not his father just abandoning him after a disagreement, it is his mother reappearing in his life only to crush him because he can’t support her financially.

On top of all that, there’s the criminal ex-girlfriend who not only broke his heart but lied to him and there’s a divided community of Turf where others are awaiting his next downfall and only a few others rooting for his success.

The guy just never catches a break and fans are wondering what it will take for Skeem Saam writers to give him a happy chapter if not happily ever after.

Here are their reactions to his scenes on Wednesday.
