This was confirmed by the director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net, Nomsa Philiso, who spoke to Daily Sun about taking this rather tough decision in order to protect contestants and viewers.

“The show is about to reach its peak, a stage where viewers are starting to have their clear favourites. While we have had to take the difficult decision not to have audiences at the live shows due to the current environment and in trying to keep our fans and contestants safe, we are excited that our valued viewers can still enjoy this exciting production with us, from a distance, with lots to look forward to as we get closer and closer to the finale,” she told the publication.

The auditions and theatre week performances are always done without the presence of a studio audience, however as the competition progresses to live performances, the theatre is always filled with supporters.

This year things are forcefully done differently as large gatherings are restricted, however with the easing of restrictions, a certain number is permitted. Idols SA has taken the decision to not allow audience members for their safety.

Viewers can however enjoy the performances of the newly selected top 16 through the Mzansi Magic channel 161, stream it on the Mzansi Magic website and through the DStv Now app.

Last week the games officially began with the selection of the top 16. Judges Unathi Nkayi, Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung and Randall Abrahams have selected the season 16 top 16 contestants and viewers already have their eyes set on their favourite.

“The fate of the contestants now rests with you, the viewers at home, as they will rely on your votes to ensure that they make it to the next round, starting with our male contestants this coming Sunday,” commented Nomsa Philiso.
