Uzalo: Patrick Shai bows out in style after schooling Njeza

Nothing is as creepy as seeing someone who passed away on videos or even worse, TV. It makes the death a little difficult to digest because they look… so alive! It is the same with Patrick Shai. His role was pre-recorded so he is still airing on Uzalo.

What makes the role so iconic is that it sort of speaks to his life’s work. What he fought so hard to impart to his fellow men. Even though his last days leading up to his suicide were filled with controversy on social media, we cannot deny the sheer dedication he showed against GBV.

Njeza signed up for sessions with Patrick and in the sessions, he tries very hard to distance his actions from that of his father. He tries very hard to separate the abuse he subjected Nosipho to, from the abuse his father subjected his mother to.

I think it’s a beautiful storyline. It makes no sense to always show a storyline that tells women to leave abusive men but doesn’t attempt to heal the men. When one woman leaves an abusive man, she saves herself but the abuser continues abusing his following partners until we all have stories about men who assault us.

By advocating for healing the perpetrator, we have a higher chance of successfully fighting GBV because we are dealing directly with the cause of the disease and not the symptoms.

To Njeza, Patrick argues, “you cannot control your partner but you can control how you react,” which is important in Njeza’s case. His abuse stemmed from the need to control every aspect of Nosipho’s life. By making him aware of this, Njeza can confront his demons truthfully!

This was a very beautiful way to remember Patrick Shai! I’m glad this is airing after he has passed on, it gives us something tangible to hold on to from him.

This week on Dloz’lami we met a family so disjointed that not even Thembi could fix them up once again. Usually there is a positive spin on the ending but this time we were lucky no one dropped dead onto the ground.
The intensity was made worse by the terrible parenting knew of the guests was accused of

Minah is a married woman who sent her childre to live in the house her mother inhabited. She did this presumably after marriage and has since abandoned the need to be an active parent in their lives. Her lack of discipline and honesty has resulted in her son resorting to alcohol. After trying to walk out of their session he came back into it and spoke his mind.

He revealed, with the help of the ancestors, that his mothers husband was abusive to him. She had taken him to her mother house and it wasn’t any better for him. He wanted to know more about his father and was suffering from alcoholism due to the stress and pressure of the situation.

He was supported by Minah’s mother, Jane, who came back to the center stage. She called out her reckless daughter, saying, “Minah, you’re failing your kids, you’re not raising them well.” This was such an embarrassing moment. I wanted to crawl and hide on her behalf. But it seemed to be the honest truth where her children were concerned.

Personal Thoughts

I think we don’t talk enough about the shortfalls of mothers. This is probably because they are in most cases, the ones who choose to stay and raise their children. But not all mothers are pure or have good intentions. Minah clearly prioritizes her married life and fighting over the Dube house. It is such a shame that her son has to resort to alcohol to feel better. He is struggling. Her daughter is also struggling. This looks like intentional neglect.

Being a parent doesn’t just mean the aesthetics only. It’s being honest with your children even about the things that hurt you. Minah clearly has never done this. It takes more than keeping children alive to be considered a parent. The emotional and mental aspect also matters. I hope parents these days know this.

The most difficult ‘enemy’ to deal with is the one that is close to you that you do not even know that it is your enemy. In the case of Funani Zwide, the one enemy that he has is the one he calls a wife.

Faith loves Funani, however; she is the one who has been inflicting pain after pain on him. She has been doing all the things that she has been doing to cover up the truth about Zobuhle. Funani is now furious and he remains steadfast in his pursuit of ‘justice’ with no room for mercy despite what everyone asks of him.

He wants Dorothy and Molefe to never go unpunished for ‘breaking’ into Zwide mansion. That time, it isn’t even Molefe and Dorothy’s fault, they just happened to be found in the wrong place at the wrong time.

 

 

 
Imagine having a wife like Faith, hiding the truth from you because she is responsible for the wife and the child you have lost. On top of that, she leads the man that has been assisting him in commiting these crimes into the house that you built for her and your children to break into the house and steal money and jewellery that amounts to over a million rands. She does all this to continue keeping the truth away from you. What would you do to her if you were to find out?

This is the most confusing time for Funani. They have the wrong suspects, they are looking in the wrong direction and whatever the items they have found in Molefe’s place will become misleading evidence. Faith always has a way of getting her husband to do as she requests, will she manage to convince him to let this one go?

The truth is, Dorothy and Molefe are simply the victims of Faith and Isaac’s scheming and evil ways and so is Nkosi and Funani.

This just goes to show that there are people who are always willing to do whatever it takes to protect a lie and conceal the truth. They are willing to do for a lie what others won’t even be willing to do for the truth to prevail.
