South African hip-hop artist Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, better known by his stage name AKA, passed away on February 10, 2023. South African-born and raised Forbes shot to fame with the release of the album’s lead track, “Victory Lap” (2010).

On 10 February 2023, Kiernan Forbes and his buddy, the chef and businessman Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, were murdered.

It is believed that the shooting occurred as the couple was on their way to a nightclub to perform in honor of Forbes’ birthday celebrations.

The murder’s motivation is currently under scrutiny.

Col. Robert Netshiunda, a spokesman for the police, told the BBC that the rapper and his buddy were shot at close range as they walked to their car.

The attackers then made a footrace for it.

The police have stated that they will not speculate as to whether or not the killings were the result of a hit, but that they also cannot rule out the idea.

Family, friends, and fans of AKA have been trying to piece together the events leading up to his and his friend’s deaths, and with the help of the CCTV footage that was posted on social media, some people close to him are suspected of killing AKA; according to people on social media, his friend Don is the one who allegedly sold AKA.

So it’s been deduced that his pal sold AKA to the assassins. What follows is the apparently online explanation of what occurred.

It couldn’t be true. AKA brazenly gunned down on a busy street? It sounded too far-fetched, too Biggie and Tupac, too much like something that would happen in America or the movies.

But it was true. It had happened. And even South Africans numbed by a never-ending stream of crime, violence and murder were horrified.

CCTV footage of the shootings, which claimed the life of the rapper and his friend, celebrity chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, showed the incident in shocking detail.

AKA died instantly, bleeding from his head on the pavement outside the restaurant on Durban’s trendy Florida Road strip where he’d eaten his last meal. Tibz succumbed to his injuries as paramedics tried to save his life.

Days later those who knew AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, are still trying to come to terms with what happened. Farah Fortune, his friend and former publicist, can barely get a sentence out without breaking down and crying.

“You just never imagine that the last time you speak to someone is actually going to be the last time.

“He became so mature in the last year. Something changed in him. I don’t know what it was, but he just grew up so much,” said Farah.
