‘I’ve amassed too much experience to be an opening act’: Ringo Madlingozi on DStv Festival

Award-winning musician Ringo Madlingozi, who recently made headlines when he walked off the DStv Delicious Festival stage mid-performance discusses his experience.

RINGO MADLINGOZI: ‘WE WAITED FOR HOURS’
The singer Ringo Madlingozi tells Sowetan that he was treated unfairly at DStv Delicious Festival compared to international musicians.


 

 

 

 

The Ndiyagodola singer also reveals that he’s gathered too much experience, of over 35 years to be one of the opening acts.

Madlingozi adds that he waited two hours before he could do a soundcheck ahead of his performance at the DStv Delicious festival on Sunday.

“My former management convinced me to perform at the festival even though I felt that I’ve amassed too much experience, of over 35 years, to be one of the opening acts.”

He says he agreed because he was told by his previous management that his fans were going to be there, and he would have a great time performing on stage. The musician adds that when he got there, there was nobody.

“As we were performing, we were then told my time was up, after just 38 minutes. This did not make me happy hence I decided to tell everyone during my last song that I would never do this festival again.”

Briefly reports that the singer has apologised to his fans and revealed in a Radio 2000 interview this week that he was given 38 minutes to perform when the initial agreement was an hour.

DSTV DELICIOUS FESTIVAL RESPONDS
Ringo Madlingozi also revealed in the Radio 2000 Iinterview that DStv Delicious Festival organizers have no respect for South Africa.

He added that until the organizers speak to him and explain why they made him, and his team feel so small, he will not be going back to the festival.

Funeka Peppeta, who is the Media director of the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival tells Sowetan that they aim to treat all artists with the utmost respect and professionalism

“After 10 years of Delicious, we can proudly say that we have supported more South African talent than most over the years, from live performances to providing a platform for them to the festivalgoers as well as in media and social.”

Peppeta adds that every artist is treated equally from the time they are booked to their experience on site. They are concerned about the complaint from Madlingozi and they were looking into his allegations.

Orlando Pirates ‘Gautrain’: Where is Tlou Segolela now?

Some call him “Rea Vaya,” others call him “Gautrain,” but back home in Limpopo he is known as Tlou Segolela.

As his nicknames suggest, the former Orlando Pirates right-winger received them due to his blistering pace on the field of play. At times, Segolela was so fast that he would dash past the ball.


 
BECOMING A HOUSEHOLD NAME AT ORLANDO PIRATES
In 2007, Segolela joined the Buccaneers senior team from the club’s development. He bacame part of the squad that won double-treble titles (which included two Premier Soccer League trophies) in two successive seasons; 2010/11 and 2011/12.

Sox, as he is also affectionately called, won the PSL Goal of the Season Award in 2011 for the goal he scored against Free States Stars.

The goal has been likened to the one scored by Argentine legend Diego Maradona in the 1986 Fifa World Cup Final in Mexico.

In 2009, Segolela was loaned to Bloemfontein Celtic (which was sold to multimillionaire Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize in 2021 and renamed Royal AM). He returned to Pirates in 2010 and left in 2015 for Platinum Stars.

After one season with Dikwena, the midfielder had a stint at Polokwane City. He joined National First Division (NFD) side Platinum City Rovers (formerly Polokwane City Rovers) between 2017 and 2020.

WHERE IS TLOU SEGOLELA NOW?
In 2021, the former Bucs star clarified his role at Platinum City Rovers after it initially appeared as though he had been appointed as the head coach of the North West-based club.

Speaking to Phakaaathi, Segolela said that he has been part of the team since it was founded in 2010 and his duty is to run the day-to-day operations as the general manager whilst working closely with head coach Tesco Macheke.

The ex-footballer is also the chairman of Tlou Segolela Sports Development (TSSD) which is aimed at improving sports in disadvantaged communities.

Some of the work the NPO is involved in is documented on the TSSD TV YouTube channel – this includes the Tlou Segolela Annual Festival Tournament (TSAFT) which was held in Moletjie Mabokele, Limpopo, and saw the winners walking away with R200 000 last year.

The NPO is also involved in other philanthropic activities such as donating food parcels and sanitary pads to households in Moletjie.

Mandela revealed on her social media accounts that her father Mafanyana Seakamela was a Pedi man, who was in a relationship with her late mother, Zindzi Mandela for a decade.
Mandela’s parents were never married and were lifelong friends.
The author also revealed that her parents were once in exile, lived in Brandfort, in the Free State and lived with her grandmother.
‘HIS ZOZO’
The author and activist also revealed that her father often called her Zozo, while she referred to him as her Pedi King. Her paternal grandfather gave her a pedi name; Makgotso, while her maternal grandfather named her, Zobuhle.

The funeral service of the activist will take place at Bryanston Methodist Church on Friday, 29 September.

Zoleka, who was the granddaughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela leaves behind her four children.

The memorial and funeral details to bid farewell to Zoleka Mandela, the late granddaughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela were announced on social media on Wednesday, 27 September.

ZOLEKA MANDELA’S MEMORIAL AND FUNERAL DETAILS UPDATED
43-year-old author, activist, and mother of six, Zoleka Mandela died on Monday morning, 25 September, a statement released by the family spokesperson announced on Tuesday, 26 September. It was said that she had been admitted to the hospital on 18 September to treat her metastatic cancer to the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord. However, after going for scans, doctors discovered a “significant disease progression” in her lungs and emboli. She passed away on Tuesday surrounded by her family.

Her memorial service will be held on Thursday, 28 September at the Mandela family home and will begin at 15:00. It will also be livestreamed and the link will be made available at a later stage. Her funeral will be held at 09:00 on Friday, 29 September at the Bryanston Methodist Church in Johannesburg. She will have a private burial at an unmentioned location.
