Nomsa Buthelezi tells her “coming out” story as part of Cremora campaign

She sat down with the cameras and told of her experience of coming out and it wasn’t the daunting experience one would expect. She explained that she was afraid of telling the truth but her mother noticed she was much happier with her current wife and her community still loved her the same.

I love when a society issue like being a part of the LGBTQIA community is relevant and will never stop being a point of contention for many. But when we see people like Nomsa embracing who they are, it can only mean that acceptance should be normalized for everyone.

The mother of two has been nothing but transparent about who she is and that’s how it should be. To me, when we talk about inclusion, it should directly correlate to everyone being represented even across the media landscape. We see a lot of gay representatuon in South Africa.

The likes of Somizi, LaSizwe and Moshe Ndiki are household names. But we don’t see enough lesbian representation, pansexuality, asexuality, etc. The ground work exists but there needs to be more of an active effort to tell LBGT stories without fear.

When asked about inclusivity in her interview, Nomsa answered that to her it was, “Knowing that everyone has RIGHTS and government now recognizes the LGBTIQIA+ Community as people that need their protection and their respect too. ”

I hope that government heeds this call and is able to assist assert the rights of those in the rainbow community.
