Muvhango fumbled a chance to have a powerful storyline on Susan and Azwindini

I will never forgive Muvhango writers for what they are doing to Susan. From the beginning of time, they made her a crazed clown. I admit that the dynamics of marriage and tolerance of infidelity have changed dramatically in the past decade but they had a chance to redeem themselves and still chose to turn a blind eye.

Susan has been married to her on-screen husband, Azwindini since the soapie started in 1997. Because she was always being mistreated by her in-laws and discarded when a new wife came into the picture, the lesson could be assumed as persevering in a marriage, even when you are mistreated half the time.

Quite recently, Azwindini chose his latest mistress and wanted to divorce Susan. Instead of changing the entire storyline and allowing Susan to rebuild her life free of a man who’s never wholeheartedly loved her, the writers chose to turn her into a bitter woman who’d go as far as using a love portion on him.

The storyline is demeaning in 2 ways. Not only is Susan depicted as a woman who doesn’t know when to leave, but she is also depicted as a desperate woman who does not know her worth.

Muvhango fumbled an opportunity of teaching women in toxic marriages that there is life outside of the marriage. That it is okay not to fight for a man who refuses to choose you. With how they are going, it’s really difficult to decipher what exactly the moral of Susan’s abusive story is.

Susan deserves so much more. Turning her into a desperate woman has been so insulting for viewers because we’ve watched her tolerate abuse in her marriage, leaving gracefully would have been more befitting.
