If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future” then you’ll understand how it applies to the latest Mnakwethu episode. Thabsile is a 20 year old who was on the show, trying to convince Gezani’s girlfriend to accept her.
She’s since changed her mind and yet her friends were trying to change her mind.
Mnakwethu’s existence on a show depends on its ability to agitate and infuriate women in their marital home. Their “happily ever after” spinoff shoes us how detrimental the effects truly are. Thabsile was only 19 when she was introduced to the show and at 20, she’s since, thankfully, come to her senses.
Her friends wanted to drag her back there and it truly disappointed me. I’m aware that the people you choose to surround yourself with determine where you go in life. But as a woman, how would you encourage a friend to enter something as complex as polygamy, citing reasons of him knowing how to treat a woman because he’s already married?
I find it easy to believe that women can be misogynists as well. They are fully capable of pushing patriarchy down someone else’s throat and it’s a reflection of Zulu culture. I hate that her eldest friend was one pushing the agenda to her. With age there should come wisdom but there isn’t in this case.
