Those who have never been to Limpopo or the area where Makhadzi was born have a common but mistaken impression that it is one of the poorest parts of all of South Africa. Makhadzi lifted her parents out of poverty through perseverance and hard effort.
Many who have visited Limpopo have expressed regret that they did not give the province a second look.
Makhadzi is originally from Limpopo Province, which is in northern South Africa. In this section of the province, mud dwellings like these are extremely rare. When compared to other provinces, housing in this one is relatively cheap, making it accessible to a large majority of the population. The province’s residents have a global reputation for building some of the most lavish and innovative houses in the world. Makhadzi is originally from Mukondeni, a Venda settlement not far from Elim. It was her grandma and her mother who raised her.
Makhadzi has entered the venda competition to outdo his neighbors, who will go to great measures to make sure their homes have seven bedrooms or more so they won’t be seen as “poor.” The growth of luxury residences has completely altered the rural character of the region. Makhadzi said she built a 10-room home for her mother, a 7-room home for her father, and a 5-room home for her grandmother during a TV interview.
People who mock Venda and lMakhadzi are probably not familiar with either place. Seeing a young, talented woman succeeding so well is motivating. She is showing the next generation that anything is possible, especially for a youngster of color.
The author has selected images of the most beautiful home that Makhadzi constructed for her mother for your viewing pleasure.
