Dropping from college twice clearly indicates that Mbalenhle Mavimbela didn’t have it all in her upbringing. Humble beginnings drive her hunger for greatness and perfection.

She studied Travel and Tourism Management at the Durban University of Technology, which she never planned and later dropped.

She was rejected from the University drama class due to a late application. An attempt to study acting at AFDA was barred by required enrolment and registration fees she couldn’t afford.

“I liked acting since my high school days; I failed to make it to the Drama class at University because I applied late and the class was already full. Desperation made me study Travel and Tourism. I also had an opportunity to study acting at AFDA, but my mother didn’t afford the required registration and enrollment fees, so I lost that one.”

How Mbalenhle Mavimbela started acting

While studying Travel and Tourism at university, she started modelling and befriended students in the drama class. She was invited to drama plays by a friend and attended auditions, and did short films. Ever since her breakthrough with the drama class friend, Mbalenhle never looked back. She later dropped from Travel and Tourism class when she got her first acting gig.

Playing Hlomu on The Wife will change her financial state; despite earning from supporting roles on screen, Mbalenhle does Television adverts. She recently appeared on a Wimpy advert, a deal believed to be worthy R150 000.
