South African musician Black Coffee — real name Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo — performed at Madison Square Garden in New York. To celebrate the special occasion, the new Minister of Sports and Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa shared a special post about the artist who he says has made history as a South African.
While many celebrated Black Coffee’s success, others have slammed Kodwa for for seemingly following in former minister Nathi Mthethwa’s “useless” footsteps.Sports and Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa has big shoes to fill in terms of making strides within SA’s entertainment and sports industry.
His predecessor, Nathi Mthethwa left a lot to be desired and was frequently badgered by celebrities such as Bonang Matheba for not doing enough to grow the industry.
Many South Africans lambasted him for only attending funerals and parties to take pics with celebs instead of actually creating a better entertainment industry for them.In fact, many went on to call him the “Minister of funerals” after he had attended so many funerals of famous people.
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD?
And now Kodwa is seemingly following in Mthethwa’s footsteps after he shared a X post about Black Coffee’s Madison Square Garden performance over the weekend.Taking to X, the minister wrote:
“History was made at Madison Square Garden. Filled to capacity, people came from all over the United States to watch a South African headlining the famed venue. This is historic @RealBlackCoffee. You make the country incredibly proud!.Many actually agreed with Phil and wondered where Kodwa is on the right track. Others however, did not agree. Here are a couple of their comments:

“Mr Minister..u seem very overseas. SAfrican youth especially in the villages & townships don’t have sports, arts ,& culture venues..those that used to be.. aren’t maintained and therefore dilapidated, shanties are being erected on sports fields. That’s where u are needed most…”
