THE ever-smiling Lusanda Songabashe took on the Joburg SPAR Women’s Race Challenge for the first time on October 6 in Melville.
The 26-year-old cashier from Kenilworth entered with high hopes to win the challengeToday, this first-timer in the race can now proudly say she holds the 10th positition.
Speaking to the COURIER she said being involved in the race helped her level of thinking even after walking away without being the winner, she’s pleased with herself.“I now know in order to win big you need to try harder and that’s what I’m going to be doing from now on.
“But it was exciting to be in the race meeting new people and the race was for a good cause. Next year I will be back and I hope to scoop it next time around,” said Lusanda.
Her ultimate goal in life is to become a chartered accountant one day.

Up for the challenge
She said she was made aware by a resident from Kenilworth who brought certain products from SPAR.
“I asked the person and she told me how to get the application forms and from there I was able to enter and the rest is history,” said Lusanda.Lusanda says she loves her job as a cashier and interacting with customers is one of her strengths.
“I’m grateful I gave it my all and my friend Lucy Mahlangu was the one who kept on motivating me to push. This isn’t the last of me,’’ she ended.
In her school days, she used to participate in athletics and she loved it dearly, but because of lack of opportunities she forfeited the sport.
But as she said, she can now revive her childhood interests with the hope of winning some money from racing and invest it in her education.
