In Pictures: Tutu’s Cheap Wooden Coffin

After fighting against prostate cancer for a good number of years, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu died a couple of days ago and his death was on top of the headlines each day ever since he passed on, people have been saying different things, some are praising him for his role during the freedom struggle, he fought with other freedom fighters, he was active during the liberation struggle, and he lived 90 good years from 1931 until 2021.

 

 

 

 

 

The family has announced that his body will be Burnt as they believe, he will be cremented as he requested, they also revealed that they will allow everyone who will want to view his body will lie in state on Thursday and Friday in the cathedral, where his ashes will be interred, and his funeral service will be held there on Saturday.

Contrary to what everyone was expecting, Tutu’s body arrived at the St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town on Thursday morning in what looked like a cheap plain wooden coffin with rope handles, it looked the cheapest there is to offer and it is reported that it was his wish to be buried in a coffin of such nature, he never wanted anything glamorous or expensive, he just wanted to remain the humble person he was even when he was no more.

As one of the struggle heroes, people were expecting that his body will be in an expensive casket, but it arrived in a simple wooden coffin with rope handles, his daughter Thandeka was on the passenger’s seat on the funeral home van, it was taken out of the van by his colleagues at church, other Archbishops whom he worked with.

Tutu’s funeral services will be held on New Years day, on the first of January 2022, he will forever be remembered for the role he played during the freedom struggle.
