Berry was announced to be in the finale with her best friend Karabo. While a lot of viewers felt that this was well deserved and is a perfect competition between the two, some viewers could not help but make mention of how Berry has used singing in vernac as a strategy to lure votes from viewers.

This followed last week’s episode where she sang a gospel song alongside Ayanda Ntanze and received accolades for her brilliance. This week, the contestants were expected to drop their singles and hers was a Zulu song titled Ungowami. The song was completely vernac and Berry did her best to deliver the song with justice.

While a lot of her fans felt that she did well by doing something different, other viewers felt that she is now using vernac songs and singing as a strategy to get people to vote for her. This was challenged by Berry fans who argued that black contestants sing in English and no one makes a fuss about it; calling for the need to allow Berry the same opportunity to do the same without the politics.

Personally, I feel that Berry is versatile and has seen the impact that vernac singing has had the last week and has decided stick to this strategy to win. In the end, she is not hurting anyone by singing in Zulu, if anything, she actually is hooking viewers as she might have hoped to.

Berry definitely sticking to her strategy to win votes. De Klerk must be turning in the mortuary #idolssa https://t.co/NfMh4INo0G

“Berry sings in Zulu for votes it’s a strategy” Leave her and her “Strategy”! #idolssa https://t.co/Y7na3uM9fP

People complaining that Berry is singing in Zulu for votes, kanti is she being voted by Zulu people only? Also Berry is embarrassing her South African she could have sang in Setswana or Isixhosa or English and that doesn’t change the fact that she is a good singer ❤️#idolssa @Phuthi2melo
