On Sunday 13 August South African actress Thuso Mbedu served as a one of the five judges at this year’s Miss South Africa pageant competition. As the competition commenced and judges inserted commentary, many fans took to Twitter pointing out that the international actress’s accent may have changed.
INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR
Thuso Mbedu has quickly solidified herself as one of South Africa’s most talented actresses. The actress first gained international recognition when she appeared as Cora in Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad. Her performance here catapulted the young actress into international success and stardom. From there on Thuso appeared alongside EGOT actress Viola Davis in the Woman King.

For some time now the South African-born actress has been situated in America. Despite flying the South African flag high, many fans have alluded to the star losing herself, specifically losing her South African accent.
Sunday was no different when Tweeps noticed that the actress sounds way different. This is not the first time South African Tweeps criticised the actress for her fleeting South African accent. Almost a year ago The Woman King star shared her two cents on the struggles of load-shedding to which a social media user told the actress to “reduce the American accent”.
The tweep said: “I was watching your interview. Don’t lose the South African accent”.
In response to the critic Thuso replied: “Don’t talk about things you know nothing about,” she said.
