South Africans are known well for their opinions on social media, and the latest happening has fueled the fire to the hashtag ‘opening up the industry’. The acting industry seems to be for a selected few and is dominated by big faces.
The last quarter of 2021 gave fans a glimmer of hope when shows like The Wife on Showmax, Umkhokha on Mzansi Magic brought in fresh face and got fans thinking that acting industry is finally moving towards the right direction.
An uproar ensued when YouTube content creator, Mihlali Ndamase announced her lasted achievement, highlighting that she managed to get an acting gig on Showmax’s original, a film titled Boxing Day.
This is not the first time Mihlali got into tweeps’ black books. Late last year actress Amanda Du Pont made allegations on social media that Uyjola 9/9 presenter, Jub Jub sexually abused her throughout their relationship. Mihlali thought it would be a great idea to ride the waves of exposure and expose the South African entertainment industry.
According to the influencer, the entertainment industry is in support of rapists and abusers. Her Twitter thread has spilt tweeps into two, with some echoing the same sentiment as her, and some felt that gender based violence is an issue that affects both genders, male and female.
The new Showmax’s original Boxing Day tells a tale of amateur kidnappers who take a government official hostage in order to bury their grandmother. However, their amateur ways catch with them and the whole plan back fires and crumbles on them.
The film featured on Boxing Day, 26 December 2021. The show has seasoned actress Zola Nombona as the lead, S’thandwie Kgoroge, Phumlani Magadla and Hamilton Dlamini.
Due to her of acting skills the easiest way to feature in the film, Mihlali has been given a role of being a slay queen, and the role to not enormous. The fact that she has elevated from being a content creator to being an actress, tweeps found it as an opportunity to drag her and the industry she once insulted.
The YouTube sensation started trending on social media shortly after she was given the tile ‘Queen Of Acting’. A tweep reflected on her acting with Lasizwe on his YouTube channel, saying that she can’t even do simple acting, yet Showmax offered her an acting role.
