Happy birthday to the Legendary xitsonga music, Dr Thomas Chauke

Dr Thomas Chauke has his style of music that includes the sound of an electric guitar and female backers, who are all his wives.

He has worked twice as hard on growing his brand as a musician which has earned him a unique place in the history of Xitsonga traditional music.


 

He played a pioneering role in the development of Xitsonga music and has been rewarded with a string of honours and awards.

Dr Thomas Chauke has released music that deals with societal matters, financial matters, infidelity, patriarchy and addressed different kinds of situations that people face daily.

Dr Thomas Chauke was born on the 4th of February in 1952. He is 68-years-old.

Dr Thomas Chauke Early Life

Dr Thomas Chauke was born in Salema Village in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. In 1971, he moved to Alexandra where he worked around fixing swimming pools and tennis courts in Sandton.

During his time in Alexandra, he reunited with his uncle, Daniel who was already in Gauteng. Dr Thomas Chauke’s uncle was into ‘Mbaqanga’ music and extremely talented with playing Vatsonga traditional guitar and he taught Dr Thomas Chauke how to play.

In 1978, Dr Thomas Chauke went back to Limpopo, in Salema where he continued with his journey as a handyman and fixed radio sets.

In 1979, he started his professional music career.

Dr Thomas Chauke started his formal education in Limpopo.

He dropped out of school at primary level while in Grade 5 at Heidelberg situated in Gauteng, in 1969.

He then went to work at a flower firm in Gauteng.

In 2010, the University of Venda recognised Dr Thomas Chauke with an honorary doctorate (PhD) for his musical contribution to nation-building. He is considered to be a giant pioneer and a remarkable philosopher through the education behind his music.

Dr Thomas Chauke was married to 5 wives but separated with one of his wives and he is left with 4 wives.

His wives’ names are Joyce (60), Lucia (52), Ethel (52) and Eve (46).

He has 23 children and 12 grandchildren.

He lost one of his grandchildren in an incident that occurred in Mondeor, South of Johannesburg where his grandchild was stabbed in a robbery.

At home he has established a musical family, starting from his daughter Conny, who has released 10 albums, all of which have achieved Gold status. His son Themba has five albums, three of which have achieved Gold status and his younger son, Hammy has five albums to his name.
