Overseas Scholarship winner, dance music producer and guitarist extraordinaire, Prince Bulo, has pledged to donate R10000 from his SAMRO Royalty income every four years to SAMRO Foundation to be used as a composer’s award. The award is specifically intended to assist young South African jazz composers.

The award will be available every four years and given to a deserving participant in the SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition for Composers.

The said award, called the Prince Bulo Composer’s Award, will be announced at this year’s Overseas Scholarships event at the Linder Auditorium on 17 August 2019. The award will be used for developing the professional profile of the composer, both online and offline benefiting the visibility and brand or career of the awardee.

The SAMRO Overseas Scholarship has a four-year cycle alternating between singers, composers, instrumentalists and keyboard players and the 2019 edition of the competition is for singers.

Competing for top spots at this year’s competition are Jazz singers Daniella Hart and Keorapetse Kolwane and Western Art vocal powerhouses Thembinkosi Magagula and Palesa Malieloa from 12 incredible semi-finalists who were put through their paces at the competition’s semi-finals at the Johannesburg’s Linder Auditorium on 15 August 2019.

These four brilliant young voices now proceed to the final round on Saturday 17 August 2019, with their sights set firmly on clinching one of two scholarships for international study, earning an opportunity to make their marks in the world of music much like Prince Bulo, Zoe Modiga and Levy Sekgapane among many others.
