Wishing South African singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, humanitarian and teacher Chaka Chaka a happy birthday today (born Yvonne Machaka on 18 March 1965). Dubbed the “Princess of Africa” (a name she received after a 1990 tour), Chaka Chaka has been at the forefront of South African popular music for 27 years and has been popular in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Gabon, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast. Songs like “I’m Burning Up”, “Thank You Mr. DJ”, “I Cry For Freedom”, “Motherland” and the ever-popular “Umqombothi” (“African Beer”) ensured Chaka Chaka’s stardom. The song “Umqombothi” was featured in the opening scene of the 2004 movie Hotel Rwanda.
Along with her siblings (two sisters), namely Doreen Machaka, Refiloe Machaka, she grew up with her mother as she lost her father when she was just 11 years old.As a result of this, her mother, Sophie Machaka, became the only one taking responsibility.
Education
However, Yvonne Chaka Chaka did not give up on herself despite the circumstances.
She was able to continue her education and, in fact, successfully did two programs at South Africa University, namely diplomas in adult literacy and local government, management & administration.In 1981, she made a remarkable feature on the show Sugar Shack, as she was the first black child. Yvonne Chaka Chaka distinct and pleasing voice separated her out from her peers and, as such, made her open and attractive to talent finders around.
Because of this unique voice, in 1985, when she was just 19 years old, Phil Hollis of Dephon Records signed her up. She released her first album known as I’m in love with a DJ, which sold about 35,000 copies.After this great success and acceptance by her fans, she released other albums such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka motherland, Who is the Bose, Burning up, Sangoma, Thank you, Mr. DJ, Power of Africa, Be Proud to be African, Who’s got the Power, Kwenzenjani, and many others.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka has released more than 20 albums and many popular songs. In addition, she has shared the stage with other famous stars such as Miriam Makeba, Annie Lennox, Angelique Kidjo, Bono, and Johnny Clegg.
Her talent has paved the way for her more than one could imagine. She has met the Queen of England, Bill Clinton, and Nelson Mandela due to her sonorous voice adored by many.
