Uzalo actress Gugu Gumede welcomed her first bundle of joy this year.
The 30 year old actress gave birth to a baby girl two months ago.
Gumede, who is the daughter of the late National Freedom Party leader, Zanele kamagwaza-msibi, said today would be bitter-sweet for her as it was also the first Mother’s Day without her mum.
“I used to go all out on Mother’s Day for my mother. It is quite emotional but I’m trying to be strong.”
Gumede said that her late mother had longed for a second grandchild.
“When I bought my house two years ago, the whole family including my mother had asked for a grandchild. At the time, I was so busy with my career and had put all my energy towards that, until last year. When I was eight weeks into my pregnancy, I decided to break the news to my mum. She used to pray about it and when I shared the news she was so excited.”
Gumede said social media had played a huge role for women trying to conceive and for new mothers.
“It has created a huge bridge for people everywhere, especially for firsttime mothers. Mothers are able to share their battles and get support and advice. Some share their difficulties on miscarriages, stillborns and not being able to conceive.”
She paid tribute to all mothers, adding that it was a beautiful experience. “For the mothers who are established, I salute them. It’s a most beautiful journey but also exhausting.
“For all the babies that are born this year, I feel that God has come full circle. The past two years have been difficult for many families, with so many lives lost, we finally feel that with a life that we have lost there is another one that is born, and it is a beautiful thing to witness,” she added.
