Gospel queen Winnie Mashaba axes husband after 16 years

Winnie Mashaba, a gospel music legend and TV host, has divorced her 16-year-husband. Tswako Music and Projects, which is controlled by Makgopa’s nephew Khaitjadi, has reportedly taken over the management of the O Mohau Messiah hitmaker.

This week, the host of the Amahubo Gospel series declined to comment on the split, stating that she did not want to discuss her personal life out of respect for her in-laws and “any possible future in-laws.”

She said:

I will never go to media [to discuss the separation]. Even if I can get married again two or five times, I will never go to the media, because I respect the family I am currently married in. I don’t want them to look like they are not good enough because I feel like I got something better … I don’t want to bring attention to them.

“Also, the family I might marry into in the future… I don’t want to bring the baggage [into it] and be branded as the wife who publishes her family troubles in the newspapers,” Mashaba added. “I have a lot of respect for people’s feelings,” she remarked.

According to sources close to the Limpopo-based musician, the marriage had ended due to adultery and irreconcilable problems between the singer and the businessman.

“Last year, things became worse when Winnie began to have doubts about a close relationship between one of her backup singers and her husband. They were really close, which was concerning because there were rumors that they were having an affair at one point,” the insider claimed.

Mashaba, who still wears her wedding ring to “distract followers from her divorce,” filed for divorce in 2017, but did not follow through for unknown reasons.

A source said:

She doesn’t want anyone questioning her marriage, that is why she is still wearing her [wedding] ring.

Mashaba and Makgopa married in 2005 and are the parents of no children. According to a source close to Mashaba’s husband, Makgopa was primarily influenced by his wife’s intimate association with a musician only identified as Khelobedu.

“Those two were really close,” the friend added, “and even if you research their names, you will see that they were very close.” “So they were as close in private as they were in public, and how can you be comfortable as a married man with your wife walking up and down with a well-known showbiz Casanova who is single?”

Mashaba disputed that a bandmate was to blame for her marriage’s demise.

“I’m still with my band,” says the singer. We’re doing well. “There isn’t anything like it,” she explained.

The popular musician said she would not share details about her private life:

I prefer my private life to remain just like that … One day they [fans] will know about my life, but for now we will remain private. Whether I get married again for the fifth or 10th time or I separate 10 times, it will just remain private because I never published that I was getting married.

During an interview with Drum magazine in 2019, the multi-award-winning artist revealed that she had experienced two miscarriages.

“I dedicated everything to God after two miscarriages,” she remarked at the time. “Sometimes I joke that if Modimo [God] grants me children today, I’ll forget the other responsibilities I have,” the singer said to the tabloid.
