Gogo Maweni Exposes Scammer Defrauding Her Durban Store: Fraud Investigation Underway

Gogo Maweni, also known as Makgotso Lee-Ann Makopo, has recently confronted an alleged scammer who has been deceiving her Durban store for some time. The well-known sangoma and celebrity revealed that the woman had been placing orders using fake invoices as proof of payment. Taking advantage of Gogo Maweni’s absence from the country, the scammer exploited the situation, knowing that her staff would be unable to confirm the payments with her.

However, the tables turned when the alleged criminal attempted to order products worth R4,500 this week. Fortunately, Gogo Maweni happened to be present at the store and recognized the scammer. The staff informed the woman that she couldn’t take the products as her payment had not reflected. Sensing that it could be the same person who had been scamming her, Gogo Maweni contacted the police without the scammer’s knowledge. When the woman arrived at the store, Gogo Maweni confronted her, questioning why she had been scamming her. The alleged scammer began crying and claimed she engaged in prostitution to support her children, seeking Gogo Maweni’s products for spiritual cleansing. However, Gogo Maweni remained skeptical, suspecting the woman of reselling or rebranding her products as her own. The scammer had defrauded Gogo Maweni of products worth R49,000.

While Gogo Maweni doesn’t mind individuals buying her products in bulk for resale, she strongly condemns fraudulent activities. She emphasized that attempting to scam her and thinking they could escape the consequences is a grave mistake. Earlier this year, Gogo Maweni faced a similar situation where scammers used her identity to deceive an elderly woman, resulting in the loss of approximately R2.5 million. Fortunately, she was able to prove her innocence, but the incident had severe consequences for the victim, who had depleted her life savings.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed that the Durban Central police are currently investigating a case of fraud. The 37-year-old woman reported that she had been defrauded of an undisclosed amount of money at her business premises on Dr. Pixley Kasem Street in Durban between October 17, 2022, and July 6, 2023.

Gogo Maweni’s unwavering stance against scams and her determination to expose fraudsters highlights the importance of combating fraudulent activities and seeking justice for victims. The ongoing investigation serves as a reminder that fraudulent actions have serious consequences under the law.
