Gqom sensation Nkosingiphile Olpha Selepe’s passing affectionately known as Gee Six Five, is still a hard pill to swallow for many South Africans, who woke up to the sudden news of her passing this morning.

The #RIPGeeSixFive has been dominated the Twitter trends list and news of her passing has sent shockwaves across social media platforms and with messages of condolences pouring in.

The musician shot fame last month, after releasing her smash hit Obani Lababantu, which is currently a hit selling song in the country. The song trended on Twitter after its release and many people have been streaming it. Gee Six Five recently performed the song live on SABC 1’s show Mzansi Insider.

News of her passing was confirmed by Sbu Mpungose, who’s also a magazine editor. “My beloved aunt, MumNcane who many of you know as #GeeSixFive is no more. She displayed leadership throughout her life, was the epitome of fearlessness & inspired many with her single #ObaniLababantu. Mthiya, Shandu kaNdaba, Sontshikazi,” she wrote on Twitter.

In a statement released by her family, they have revealed that the musician passed away after receiving a positive diagnosis for Covid-19 on Monday. The musician had been isolating at home but sadly she passed on in the early hours of this morning.

“Mrs. Selepe passed away today in Durban where she had been self-isolating under the watch of her family after receiving a positive diagnosis for Covid-19 on Monday,” reads the statement.

The 65-year-old retired teacher had an illustrious career, as she had a teaching stint in the UK and at the time of her passing, she was pursuing a doctoral degree. Before the musician passed on larger-than-life TV star Somizi had expressed his intentions of working with her.
